Even though template-directed synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) has been extensively researched in the last three decades, they still fall short on their initial promise of being actual "artificial antibodies" that can replace their natural counterparts in sensors and assays. In part, this is directly linked to the statistical nature of radical polymerization. This seminar talk will highlight examples on how to tackle this issue and introduce examples for both MIP thin films and nanoparticles. Analytes will cover environmentally relevant chemical species, peptides and engineered nanoparticles. Aside of the sening side, the influence of replacing free radical polymerization by controlled processes will be discussed.
