The evolution of cooperative breeding

Cooperative breeding – where some sexually mature individuals forego independent breeding,  and help others to raise non-descendent offspring – is widespread in birds, mammals and invertebrates. Because helping others is costly, this behaviour seemingly contradicts the concept of ‘selfish’ natural selection. This intriguing evolutionary paradox has been the focus of much study aiming to unravel the evolutionary drivers underlying cooperative breeding. In this talk, I outline the costs and benefits of cooperative breeding for helping and breeding individuals and will incorporate new developments in the study of the evolution of cooperative breeding.
