Dear Visitor,

Thanks a lot for your interest in my course “Equilibria of Materials”. This course is organized on-line from 9 February till 11 May 2021 on Tuesdays, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Although it is meant for my official international students, anyone can join the classes from Miskolc or from any distance. If you are interested, please write to me at kaptay@hotmail.com.

For the Hungarian visitors let me mention that this course is an English analogue of my course held in Hungarian “Anyagegyensúlyok” a day before (on Mondays, between 4 pm and 6 pm). So, if you join both courses, on Mondays you will learn the physics, while on Tuesdays you will learn the language.

The course “Equilibria of Materials” is about calculating the equilibrium state of one- and two-component systems as function of temperature and average composition. Different states can be liquid or gaseous / vapor or solid. Solids can be amorphous or crystalline. Crystalline phases can have very different crystal structures, which all have different properties. In other words this course can be called “The basics of Calphad”, where Calphad means “Calculation of phase diagrams”, and this acronym means a method, a journal, a conference series and a good international team.

During the course you will get personalized home works to calculate phase diagrams by excel and you will have an oral exam at the end. But all this is not compulsory for the visitors. However, if you perform all home works and pass the oral on-line exam, you will get a personal certificate. Although it is not a legal document, you can make some use of it. For example, if you present it any time in the future (in my life-time) at the University of Miskolc studying materials engineering or metallurgical engineering at the first class of “Equilibria of Materials”, you will be made free of attending the lectures and you will have your mark 5 (excellent).
